What should a free SEO audit include?
Direct answer: A free SEO audit worth your time tells you what is blocking enquiries and rankings, which phrases are realistic, who your competitors are, which technical issues to fix first, how your local listings look, a timing band (not a fantasy date), and a checklist you can do yourself or hire against. You should keep the plan whether or not you hire anyone.
"Free SEO audit" covers everything from a useful plan to a screenshot designed to scare you into a contract. This guide sets out what a good one contains, how long the results it describes usually take in New Zealand, and how to read the Ahrefs Domain Rating number that often headlines these reports.
What should a free SEO audit include?
Decisions you can act on, not a 40-page scare PDF. At minimum:
- Plain-English site analysis: what is working, what is broken, and what is holding back enquiries.
- Keyword and competitor context: the phrases customers actually use, which ones are realistic for you, and who currently wins them. The tool behind any numbers should be named.
- Technical and indexing issues worth fixing first, in order: robots blocks, pages Google cannot index, broken titles and meta descriptions.
- Local listing notes if you serve an area: your Google Business Profile, hours, categories and whether your name, address and phone match everywhere. (See fixing a neglected Google Business Profile.)
- A realistic timing band for the phrases you agree to target, not a promise of #1 next week.
- A path forward: a DIY checklist, or a clear done-for-you option, so you can act either way.
What our free engagement report covers
Backroom Ops' free engagement report is built around those points, and it is yours to keep:
- Site analysis in plain English.
- Keywords and competitors, from Ahrefs plus Google Search Console when you give access.
- A realistic roadmap toward the top 5 on agreed phrases, with timing bands.
- A DIY checklist or a done-for-you implementation path.
If it is useful, we can add a snapshot of what ChatGPT, Claude or Google AI Overviews say for your customers' questions. That is a record of current answers, not a promise of future mentions. Background on how those surfaces work is in our plain-English GEO guide.
How long does SEO take for a small business in NZ?
Think in bands, not magic days. Early hygiene wins often show in weeks; competitive phrases usually need months of consistent work. These are the bands we typically discuss. They are not promises:
- 1–4 weeks: Google Business Profile cleanup, title and meta fixes, indexing blockers, robots issues.
- 1–3 months: new service or town pages starting to earn impressions; review velocity improving.
- 3–12 months: tougher competitive phrases, earning links and mentions, content that compounds.
Your free report states bands for agreed phrases only. Three NZ factors change the clock:
- Market size: a Hamilton suburb is a smaller, faster market than national retail keywords, so local Maps fixes can move faster than national ecommerce head terms. More on that in local SEO for Hamilton and Waikato.
- Seasonality: tourism, agriculture and back-to-school retail all have their own rhythm.
- Regulated niches where a professional must approve every draft.
What speeds things up: fast approvals, accurate local pages, fixing technical blockers, and earning real reviews. What slows things down: thin sites, inconsistent name, address and phone details, ignored Merchant Center issues, and drafts that wait months for approval. AI assistant mentions follow the same "no fixed date" rule: get the basics in place, then track monthly.
What is Domain Rating (Ahrefs), and should an audit include it?
Domain Rating (DR) is Ahrefs' proprietary 0–100 score for how strong a site's backlink profile looks relative to others in Ahrefs' index. Ahrefs' own documentation has the vendor definition, and our glossary has the plain-English version. It is useful for comparing link authority between sites, and dangerous when treated as the goal.
What DR is not:
- Not a Google metric or ranking factor. Google uses its own signals, and PageRank was retired as a public metric long ago.
- Not a ChatGPT or other AI recommendation score.
- Not proof of traffic.
- Not a number anyone should make up. If we have not looked it up in Ahrefs, we do not state a figure or a search volume.
An audit can include DR as context, with a clear caveat, not as a vanity centrepiece. On calls, we put your DR next to two or three competitors and the phrases that actually bring in customers. A lower-DR local business can still win Maps and long-tail service searches in Hamilton if its relevance and Google Business Profile are stronger. There is no universal DR target: prioritise page-level relevance and local trust, and earn links by being worth citing (useful NZ guides, suppliers, community). Buying links to inflate DR is risky and often breaks Google's spam policies, and chasing DR with irrelevant links wastes money.
Red flags in "free audits"
- A guaranteed #1 ranking. Walk away.
- Search volume or traffic charts with no tool named.
- Findings held hostage until you pay.
- DR panic with no page-level advice, or offers of "DR 70 in 30 days".
- Overnight timelines for competitive phrases.
Illustrative examples
Illustrative examples based on patterns we see with NZ small businesses. Details generalised; not specific client results.
An owner received a "free audit" that was only a DR screenshot. Our report listed ten fixes in order, three phrases with timing bands, and a DIY column. They implemented half of it themselves and later retained us for weekly feed work.
A café fixed its hours and photos in week one and saw call tracking lift. A national niche Shopify store needed a quarter of feed and content work before competitive phrases moved. Same playbook, different clocks.
A Waikato retailer worried that its DR was lower than a national chain's. We refocused on service-area pages and Shopping feed fixes instead. Enquiries moved before DR did, which was fine.
FAQ
What should a free SEO audit include?
Plain-English site analysis, keyword and competitor context, technical and indexing issues worth fixing, local listing notes if relevant, a realistic timing band for agreed phrases, and a DIY or done-for-you path. You should keep the plan even if you do not hire anyone.
How long does SEO take for a small business in NZ?
Hygiene fixes can show movement in weeks, while competitive phrases often take months. It depends on competition, your starting point and how quickly you approve changes.
Should a free audit promise #1 rankings?
No. Nobody can honestly promise that, so walk away from anyone who does.
Is Domain Rating a Google ranking factor?
No. DR is a third-party Ahrefs score; Google does not use it. Treat it as comparative context only.
What DR should my NZ small business have?
There is no universal target. Compare yourself with real competitors on the phrases you care about, and put relevant pages and local trust ahead of the number.
Does the Backroom Ops report include AI or ChatGPT checks?
We can snapshot assistant answers for your question set as part of the diagnostic, without promising mentions.
