How to show up in Google AI Overviews (NZ)

Backroom Ops team · · Updated · All guides

Direct answer: To show up in Google AI Overviews, do normal, excellent SEO: pages that are indexed and snippet-eligible, helpful and accurate content, consistent business details, and Googlebot allowed. Google Search Central says there are no additional technical requirements and no special AI schema for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Eligibility makes you citeable; it does not guarantee a citation.

This guide is for NZ owners searching "how to show up in AI Overviews", "how to rank in Google AI Overviews" or "AI Overviews SEO" (optimisation, with an s). It sticks to the primary source rather than third-party "Overview hacks": Google Search Central — AI features and your website.

How to show up in Google AI Overviews?

Become eligible the way Google documents it, then measure. Per Google, the same foundational SEO best practices apply to AI features as to Search overall. To be shown as a supporting link, a page must be indexed and eligible to display with a normal Search snippet. No extra Overview-only optimisation is required.

  • Allow Googlebot, return HTTP 200, and serve indexable text content.
  • Put important content in visible text, not only in images or hero videos.
  • Use internal links so Google can discover your pages.
  • Use structured data only where it matches the visible text.
  • Keep Merchant Center and Google Business Profile up to date if you use them.
  • Avoid nosnippet, data-nosnippet or max-snippet:0 on pages you want quoted.

Two caveats from Google itself. First, meeting the requirements does not mean Google will crawl, index or serve the content. Second, Overviews only appear when Google decides they add value beyond classic results, and many queries never trigger one. Google also describes a "query fan-out" technique — running multiple related searches across subtopics — when generating AI responses. In practice, a clear, specific NZ page can be selected even when it is not the only classic blue-link winner. It is still not a switch you can flip.

How to rank in Google AI Overviews?

There is no Overview leaderboard like classic positions 1–10. When people say "rank" or "get cited" in an AI Overview, they mean the same outcome: being named or linked as a supporting source when an Overview triggers. There is no separate Overview auction.

A strong classic ranking helps visibility, but a #1 page may not be linked in the Overview for that query. So the work is the same stack every time: eligibility, extractable answers, tidy entity and shopping data, and a monthly log of which queries show Overviews.

How to get cited in Google AI Overviews?

Clear eligibility first, then become the easiest accurate source to link:

  1. Confirm the URL is indexed with Search Console's URL Inspection, and check it is previewable.
  2. Confirm snippet eligibility — no nosnippet or max-snippet:0 on that page, including any a theme or app added without you noticing.
  3. Lead with a direct answer, then support it with detail competitors do not have: your process, the towns you serve, GST-inclusive price ranges if you publish them, honest shipping information.
  4. Match any schema to visible text, remembering Google requires no special AI schema.
  5. Log Overview-bearing queries monthly and note which brands and URLs are linked.

Backlinks may support overall Search performance, but Google does not document a "backlinks in, Overview citation out" switch.

Do I need special schema for AI Overviews?

No. Google explicitly says you do not need new machine-readable AI files or special schema.org types to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Accurate schema that matches the page can still help Search understand it generally, but it is not an Overview on/off switch.

The controls over what Google can show from your pages in Search AI features are the classic ones: Googlebot access via robots.txt, plus noindex and snippet controls. Google-Extended relates to other Google AI systems (for example Gemini training and grounding contexts); it is not the switch for AI Overviews or AI Mode in Search. Be wary of "block all AI" robots templates that accidentally break snippet eligibility.

Is SEO enough for Google AI Overviews?

SEO is necessary for eligibility but not sufficient to promise a citation. It is enough to become eligible; it is not enough to claim you will appear.

  • What SEO covers: crawl, index, content quality, technical health, snippet controls.
  • What also matters in practice: consistent details about who you are, reviews gathered within the rules, accurate Merchant Center data for products, and content that is genuinely distinct from commodity copy.
  • What is outside your control: whether Google triggers an Overview for a query, and which sources it links.

Good AI Overviews SEO removes blockers and makes you citeable. It cannot buy a guaranteed supporting link. Labels such as AEO and generative engine optimisation (GEO) are useful shorthand for answer-first packaging — extractable paragraphs, question-style headings — on top of SEO, not instead of it. For most NZ small businesses, fix foundational SEO and your local entity first, since that still drives most discovery, then package answers and measure Overviews where they appear.

Google AI Mode vs AI Overviews: what is the difference?

Both are Google Search AI features with shared foundational SEO guidance. They are not two different websites to build.

When it showsWhen Google decides it adds value beyond classic results — often does not triggerExploration, comparison and multi-step questions

Special markup? No special AI schema requiredNo special AI schema required
Guarantee?NoneNone

Google notes the two may use different models and techniques, so responses and supporting links can vary, and both may use query fan-out. Showing in one does not automatically mean showing in the other, but you do not need a separate "AI Mode" site.

Are they available in New Zealand? Feature availability can vary by country, language and rollout. Check what you actually see on google.co.nz for your own queries, and treat screenshots as dated evidence rather than permanent UI.

Google AI Overviews for local NZ businesses

Local businesses need the same eligibility (indexed and snippet-eligible) plus a trustworthy local entity:

  1. Google Business Profile: a truthful primary category, correct hours, services and photos. If yours has drifted, see fixing a neglected Google Business Profile.
  2. NAP: name, address and phone identical on your site, GBP and directories.
  3. Pages: answer your process, GST ranges if you publish them, and the suburbs and towns you actually serve.
  4. Reviews: polite asks, calm replies, no fake reviews. See getting Google reviews without breaking the rules.
  5. Measure: log local questions with and without Overviews, and which brands are linked.

Do you need a page for every suburb? Only for places you genuinely serve. Thin suburb doorway pages help no one; write real pages for real coverage (for example Hamilton, Cambridge or Te Awamutu, if true).

Does ranking in the Maps local pack mean an Overview citation? No. The local pack and AI Overviews are different surfaces. A strong GBP helps your overall local presence; it does not force an Overview link.

Product and shopping queries

For product-shaped queries, Merchant Center health matters. Disapprovals and mismatches between the feed and the page — wrong availability, out-of-date prices, titles that do not match — sink citeability even when the brand story is strong. Clear those first: Merchant Center disapprovals on Shopify: a triage order.

How to measure AI Overviews (Search Console)

Google reports AI feature traffic inside Search Console's overall Web search Performance data; there is no separate Overview report. Pair Console with a manual log: list the queries in your niche where Overviews (or AI Mode answers) appear, and record which brands and URLs are linked. Trend it over months, not from one screenshot. If ChatGPT or Claude matter to your customers, keep them as separate logs — the systems differ (see our ChatGPT and Claude guides).

Practical checklist for this month

  1. Run URL Inspection on your money pages: indexed and previewable?
  2. Remove accidental nosnippet or max-snippet:0 on pages you want quoted.
  3. Check the first screen of each key page answers the query with NZ facts (GST, towns, shipping).
  4. Rewrite 3–5 thin pages with answer-first NZ copy.
  5. Align NAP, GBP hours and categories; fix Merchant Center disapprovals if you sell products.
  6. List 10 Overview-bearing queries, screenshot who is linked, and re-check in 30 days.

What not to do

  • Buy "guaranteed AI Overview placement" or citation retainers.
  • Create doorway pages written only for Overview keywords.
  • Mark up fake FAQ answers.
  • Pay for "special AI Overview schema" that Google says is unnecessary.
  • Confuse Ahrefs Domain Rating with Overview eligibility.
  • Block Googlebot or strip snippets while hoping for citations.

Illustrative examples

Illustrative examples based on patterns we see with NZ small businesses. Details generalised; not specific client results.

Hamilton ecommerce brand. The owner wondered why a competitor appeared in an Overview for a category query. The competitor's category page answered materials, GST-inclusive price bands and shipping to the North Island in plain HTML, and its Merchant Center availability matched. The brand's page was a thin collection, stock was wrong in the feed, and a theme app had injected a preview-control meta tag the owner never noticed. The owner approved feed, copy and snippet-control fixes; eligibility and clarity improved, and we logged the same category queries monthly. Overview inclusion was never promised.

Rototuna trades business. Strong word-of-mouth, but the GBP showed the wrong hours and the website never named a suburb. Competitors appeared in local-shaped Overviews. After the owner approved hour fixes and one real "areas we serve" page, eligibility and clarity improved. Inclusion was still not promised.

Auckland professional-services firm. Strong classic rankings, but never in Overviews for comparison queries. The pages were indexed; the answers were buried below hero videos. After approved answer-first rewrites, the pages were clearer and easier to quote. Whether they appear remained Google's call — we logged it rather than promising it.

FAQ

How do I show up in Google AI Overviews?

Follow Google's published guidance: foundational SEO, pages that are indexed and eligible for a normal snippet, helpful people-first content, and an up-to-date Business Profile and Merchant Center where relevant. Appearance is not guaranteed.

Is a citation the same as ranking #1?

No. Overview supporting links are a Search feature, not a classic blue-link position. Strong classic rankings can help visibility but do not equal an Overview citation.

Do I need special schema for AI Overviews?

No. Google says you do not need special schema.org types, machine-readable AI files or other unique markup for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Use accurate schema that matches visible text where it helps Search generally.

Is SEO enough for Google AI Overviews?

SEO is necessary for eligibility but not a promise of inclusion. Entity consistency, reviews and accurate Merchant Center and Business Profile data also matter, and Google decides when an Overview appears and what it links.

Do I need different SEO for AI Mode?

No. Google says the same foundational SEO applies to AI Overviews and AI Mode, with no additional special requirements. Build citeable pages once.

Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?

Google-Extended relates to other Google AI systems, not AI Overviews or AI Mode in Search. Those are governed by Googlebot access, noindex and snippet controls.

Can Backroom Ops guarantee an Overview citation?

No. We improve eligibility and clarity and measure the results; Google decides.
