How to rank in ChatGPT search and get your business seen

Backroom Ops team · · Updated · All guides

Direct answer: You cannot buy a ChatGPT search rank. To appear, get listed or get mentioned, make the basics undeniable: crawlable NZ answer pages, an identical name, address and phone everywhere, a tidy Google Business Profile, real reviews, and a robots.txt that allows OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User if you want citations. Re-run the same customer questions monthly. Nobody can honestly guarantee ChatGPT will name you.

This guide answers the People Also Ask wording we captured on google.co.nz for “how to rank in ChatGPT” (20 Sept 2026, unpersonalised). We write as Backroom Ops in Hamilton, NZ: approval-gated SEO and Shopify store work, not overnight-rank marketing.

How to rank in ChatGPT search?

ChatGPT search does not publish a Google-style results page you can “rank” on. In practice, ranking means your business is named, or your URL is cited, when someone asks with browsing or search enabled. You win that by being the clearest, most consistent public entity in your niche, then measuring.

Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and others share foundations, but their ranking systems differ and there is no universal AI leaderboard. Treat each assistant as its own citation surface. Nobody, including Backroom Ops, controls ChatGPT’s outputs. For the other surfaces, see Google AI Overviews: how to show up (NZ) and how to rank in Claude.

OpenAI documents its crawlers separately: OAI-SearchBot for search citations and GPTBot for training. Treat OpenAI’s published crawler documentation as the reference. Google’s guidance on helpful content and structured data still matters, because many AI surfaces lean on the open web.

How to do SEO for ChatGPT (and appear in its results)?

SEO for ChatGPT is classic technical and content SEO plus answer packaging, not a separate auction. Package the truth so machines can quote it: who you are, what you offer, proof, crawler access and a measurement log.

1. Entity consistency

Use the same trading name, phone and address format on your site, Google Business Profile and major directories. Where relevant, align with how you appear on the NZ Companies Office register. GST-inclusive and GST-exclusive pricing must not contradict itself across pages.

2. Answer-first pages

Assistants need text they can fetch and quote: real HTML, not text locked in images. Each money page should open with a 40–80 word answer a stranger (or an assistant) could lift, under question-shaped H2s that match how people ask. Add FAQ or Article schema only where those answers genuinely exist on the page; fake FAQ spam hurts trust.

Hamilton and Waikato owners often lose to a plainer competitor whose page says “We cover Chartwell, Rototuna and Cambridge, callouts within X hours” while their own site only says “excellence in service.” Assistants prefer the sentence they can lift. NZ detail that earns trust:

  • GST-inclusive or exclusive prices, labelled consistently.
  • The towns and suburbs you actually serve, and honest rural delivery.
  • Returns language that matches the NZ Consumer Guarantees Act practice you follow, not US boilerplate.
  • The payment options you really offer, such as bank deposit, Paystation or Shop Pay.

3. Technical access

Serve plain, server-rendered HTML and let AI search crawlers in (robots.txt detail below).

4. Classic SEO and off-site proof

Indexation, internal links, useful titles and local relevance still matter; pages that already earn Google impressions are easier for any system that reads the web. Then add reviews within Google’s rules, supplier stockist pages, chambers, industry associations and local mentions that repeat the same entity. We draft review asks and reply templates; complaints always go to the owner first. See Google reviews without breaking the rules.

5. Shopify stores: feed truthfulness

Shopping-style answers fail when feed data is wrong, even if the brand page looks fine. If you sell online, check that product titles and Merchant Center availability match the live Shopify catalogue, that best sellers are not disapproved, and that stock sync is not lying.

How to get mentioned in ChatGPT and get it to recommend your business?

Mentions follow evidence: assistants name businesses that look like one coherent entity with proof. Fix identity first, then publish pages that answer recommendation intent on the first screen: who you serve, where (Hamilton, Waikato or NZ-wide), your process, your pricing approach with GST notes, and the next step.

In our diagnostics we paste the owner’s trading name, phone and address from the site footer next to their Google Business Profile. Mismatches are the most common silent failure: an extra “Ltd”, an old mobile number, or suburb versus postal address drift. Assistants lean on the same public footprint customers use; our guide to fixing a neglected Google Business Profile covers the tidy-up.

How to get listed on ChatGPT?

There is no official “submit my NZ business to ChatGPT” directory for organic answers, and no Companies-Office-style register inside it. Getting listed means being cited or named from public sources. Control what you can: your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, industry directories and supplier pages. Do not confuse this with buying ads inside ChatGPT where those products exist. Ads are paid placement; organic mentions are earned evidence.

How do I allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt?

Publish an explicit allow group rather than hoping a blanket User-agent: * rule covers every bot the way you expect when other Disallow lines exist. A typical file has these groups, each on its own lines:

  • User-agent: OAI-SearchBot with Allow: / (search-time indexing and citations)
  • User-agent: ChatGPT-User with Allow: / (search-time fetches)
  • User-agent: GPTBot with Allow: / (training; allow unless you deliberately opt out)
  • User-agent: Bingbot with Allow: /
  • User-agent: * with Allow: /
  • A Sitemap: line pointing to your own sitemap URL

Confirm the live file in a browser after deploying. Our own /robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, GPTBot, Claude/Anthropic crawlers, Bingbot and Googlebot.

Why Shopify and Webflow sites get this wrong. Apps, password gates and stale “block AI” snippets insert Disallow rules owners forget. On Shopify, check theme apps and any security app that rewrites headers; behind Cloudflare, make sure you are not challenging legitimate crawlers without logs.

Training versus search: decide deliberately. Blocking one bot does not configure the other. If you want to “block all AI”, block training if you must, but still allow the search citation bots if you want to be quoted in ChatGPT answers. Put the GPTBot and Claude policy in writing with the owner.

Pair robots.txt with llms.txt. An emerging practice is a public /llms.txt summarising who you are, quoteable facts and key URLs. Ours lists Hamilton NZ, hello@backroomops.co.nz, the free diagnostic and NZ$790/month (ex GST) store ops. It does not replace robots.txt; it helps ethical crawlers find the map.

Allowing bots removes a technical blocker. It does not guarantee citations.

Does ChatGPT use Google rankings?

Not as a one-to-one copy of Google’s top ten. Depending on the product and settings, ChatGPT draws on public web content, search indexes (sometimes including Bing or other providers) and training data. Treat Google strength as correlated helpfulness, not causation you can buy.

In client diagnostics, businesses with a tidy Google Business Profile, clear service pages and Search Console impressions sometimes appear in assistant answers sooner than prettier sites with thin copy, and sometimes they do not. That variance is why we refuse guarantees and insist on monthly logs.

So do both: win the Google queries you can realistically serve (local and specific), then make those same pages answer-first for assistants. SEO is not dead: Google Search and Maps still drive most discovery for NZ small businesses.

Does Bing Places help ChatGPT for local businesses?

Bing Places will not make ChatGPT recommend you, but an accurate listing reduces entity confusion and supports ecosystems that use Microsoft local and search data. Consistency helps any system decide which plumber in Hamilton is real; that is the mechanism, not a secret API.

Google’s AI Overviews have mentioned Bing accessibility as an industry talking point, but “rank on Bing to rank in ChatGPT” as a guarantee is oversell. Google Business Profile stays the priority for NZ customers. Claim or verify Bing Places and mirror your Google data exactly: trading name, phone (with consistent +64 formatting), address and service area, hours and holiday exceptions, and true categories.

How to measure it, and what to do this month

We do not invent a ChatGPT position. We run a fixed question set and compare who is named with your site, Google Business Profile and directories. Gaps are usually boring: mismatched phone numbers, pages that never answer the question, blocked crawlers, or Merchant Center disapprovals on hero products.

  1. Write 8–12 questions customers actually ask, including “who should I use?” and suburb variants.
  2. Align trading name, phone and address; fix Google Business Profile categories and hours.
  3. Publish or rewrite 3–5 answer pages with GST and NZ logistics where relevant.
  4. Confirm AI search crawlers and Bingbot are allowed, and note the date in your log.
  5. Run the questions in ChatGPT with search, Google AI features and one other assistant. Log the date, businesses named and URLs cited.
  6. Pair the log with Google Search Console. Re-run in 30 days and trend over months, not vanity screenshots.

What not to do

  • Pay for “guaranteed ChatGPT ranking” or guaranteed recommendations.
  • Keyword stuffing, doorway pages, fake reviews, review gating or paid link schemes dressed as “AI PR”.
  • US generic FAQ copy that gets NZ tax, shipping or company structure wrong.
  • Treating Ahrefs Domain Rating as a ChatGPT rank. DR is link context, not an assistant placement score (see the glossary).

Illustrative examples

Illustrative examples based on patterns we see with NZ small businesses. Details generalised; not specific client results.

Not named for a local query. A Waikato service business asked ChatGPT (with search) for “a good [trade] near Hamilton.” Three competitors were named; it was not. The competitors had matching details, a service page covering process and GST-inclusive price ranges, and recent reviews. The missing business had almost no service text, a phone number that differed from its Google Business Profile, and a blanket robots.txt Disallow that also hit unknown bots. The owner approved aligning listings, opening AI search crawlers, publishing five answer pages and re-checking monthly. No promised mention date. The monthly log is the scoreboard.

A copied snippet. A store had copied a “block GPTBot” snippet that also interfered with unknown bots. After the owner approved a clearer allow list for search crawlers, fetch tests stopped returning 403 errors. Access was restored; citations were still not promised.

Page one, never named. A site on Google’s page one for a niche NZ phrase was never named in ChatGPT. The ranking page was a thin location doorway. Rewriting it into a genuine answer page (process, GST, service area) improved human engagement first; assistant citations were monitored separately without a promised date.

FAQ

How long until ChatGPT mentions my business?

There is no fixed timeline. Plan on weeks to months of basics and track your question set monthly.

Is ChatGPT SEO different from Google SEO?

The foundations overlap but the outputs differ: Google ranks URLs, while ChatGPT may name or cite you. Clear NZ pages help both.

If I rank #1 on Google, will ChatGPT recommend me?

Not automatically. Ranking helps discovery, but you still need clear, citeable pages and a consistent entity.

Should I block GPTBot?

GPTBot is for training and OAI-SearchBot is for search citations, so they are separate decisions. For visibility in ChatGPT search answers, allowing OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User matters most.

Is SEO dead now with AI?

No. Google Search and Maps still drive most discovery for NZ small businesses, and pages that answer clearly help both classic search and AI answers.
